Choosing an activity book for a preschooler in India
Most activity books are bought in a hurry and used twice. Usually not because the child was not interested, but because the book asked for a skill they did not have yet, or it could only be done once. Here is what to check before paying.
1. Check the skill, not the age on the cover
Age labels are marketing. A book labelled 2+ that expects a child to trace inside a narrow line is really a 4+ book. Open it and look at one page: can your child already hold a crayon with two fingers, draw a line from top to bottom, and stay roughly inside a wide boundary? If not, look for stickers, peeling, matching and sorting instead of tracing.
2. Reusable beats paper at this age
Reusable stickers
Peel and place is a genuine finger-strength exercise, and the activity survives being done again.
One-time paper worksheets
Fine for older children who write. For a preschooler, a torn page usually ends the activity for good.
3. Materials worth paying attention to
Board thickness
Thin paper tears under a two-year-old's pressure. Look for card or laminated pages.
Safe inks and rounded corners
Everything at this age eventually reaches the mouth. Ask about non-toxic inks.
Size
Big pages for big movement. Small boxes force small strokes, which come much later.
Pen included and refillable
A wipe-clean book with no matching marker is a dead end after one month.
4. What good sequencing looks like
Flip to the back. If page three and the last page look equally hard, there is no progression. A good book moves in a visible order: strokes, then shapes, then letters, or sorting, then matching, then counting. Sequencing is the single biggest difference between a kit made with teachers and one made by a printer.
